SHINE Perinatal & Pediatric Palliative Care Program
The SHINE program (Sharing, Healing, Inspiring, Nurturing, Enduring) is the perinatal and pediatric palliative care program within Blank Children's Hospital. SHINE offers an additional layer of support for pregnant women, children and families.
Perinatal palliative care focuses on the care of families facing a devastating diagnosis in their unborn child and the length of the child's life is expected to be shortened or the baby/child may have significant suffering because of his/her condition.
Pediatric palliative care focuses on the care of children and families living with a serious medical condition that could shorten their life expectancy and affect quality of life. In keeping with the general concepts of palliative care
(communication, pain and symptom management, cultural sensitivity, grief and bereavement) the SHINE team walks with the family throughout their journey beginning at the time of diagnosis. Palliative care is not a place; it is more a frame of mind. It is a way of caring for the patient and family with dignity and love.
